Creativity in art

Many of us are fascinated by the idea of making art, but we do not know how to get started. The first thing to do is to go and see works of art, to get an idea of all there is in the infinitely rich world of art. Visiting exhibitions is a great start. Just seeing art can make you more creative, and inspire you to start creating something yourself.

However, perhaps the thought of creating something out of nothing, without any rules is what intimidates the most. Some people (typically what is standardly thought of as the “creative types”) enjoy the freedom in art and the idea that anything can be art as long as the maker so intends. But many people feel lost when faced with the idea that you can do anything, and no one will tell you whether it is right or wrong, good or bad.

In short, we are used to following rules, and we crave them to give us guidance. But no worries, since in fact lots of professional artists use self-imposed rules, precisely because there is such a thing as too much freedom.
